5 Quick Tips for Fitness Success

I have a quick blog read for you this week. Here are five simple points to help you make the most of your fitness process and see your best success. These may seem simple, but many people neglect these key areas.

  1. Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand. Simply exercising will not yield the results you want. A proper nutrition plan must accompany any exercise program. On the other hand, while a person can lose weight with diet alone, he or she will not build a lean, sleek physique without exercise. For the best results, you must combine a focus on workouts and nutrition.

  2. Stop thinking you know what a nutrition plan is. Many people think they know what a proper nutrition plan is, or think because they are Vegan, low carb, Paleo, etc., that there overall nutrition plan is where it needs to be for fitness success. "I just need to eat lean meat and some fruits and veggies" is indicative of what a person who thinks he or she is in the know might say and is a vague, narrow, and uneducated statement. A proper nutrition plan takes into account the various aspects of nutrition, including macronutrients, meal timing, food quality, and, of course, caloric intake. If you do not know, educate yourself.

  3. Don't just "wing it" in the gym. Over the past 14 years, we have worked out with, trained, or viewed literally hundreds of people exercising. It is pretty easy to tell who has a plan and who does not if we pay enough attention. Do not be the guy or gal who walks into the gym every day without a plan or who just has a plan for the day. A well thought out exercise plan thinks a minimum of weeks in advance and ideally months in advance. My personal training plan, and the plans I create for clients, think a minimum of 12 weeks in advance.

  4. Keep it simple—If it works, keep doing it. Sometimes the simplest option is the best option. If you are currently following a nutrition and exercise plan that is allowing you to achieve or maintain your fitness and appearance goals, keep doing it. While change is ideal to kick start a stale routine, if you enjoy the program you are doing, and it is getting results, a change may do more harm than good. Assess the program you are currently using and determine if you need to keep going or make a change. Do not make unncesscasy change, do not focus on things that are directly tied your goals, and keep your focus as narrows as possible to reach your goals, as this will be less confusing and less time consuming.

  5. Get help. If you cannot figure out the process on your own, get help. You are not a coach, trainer, or s similar professional such as a dietitian. It makes no sense that you would know everything or just be able to figure it out on your own. At the least educated yourself by reading content from reputable sources, which is likely not your favorite Instagram star. If you know you need to change things but cannot figure it out, then work with someone in the know or hire a personal trainer. If you think you're in the know, but you do not see results, it might be time to consider you don't know as much as you think you do and work with someone in the know or hire a personal trainer.
